Conservationists and Native American tribes are suing over the U.S. Navy’s expanded use of sonar in training exercises off the country’s west coast, saying the noise can harass and kill whales and other marine life.

In a lawsuit being filed by the environmental law firm Earthjustice, the Natural Resources Defense Council and other groups claim the National Marine Fisheries Service was wrong to approve the Navy’s plan for the expanded training.

They said regulators should have considered the effects repeated sonar use can have on those species over many years and should have restricted where the Navy could conduct sonar and other loud activities to protect orcas, humpbacks and other whales, as well as seals, sea lions and dolphins.

Instead, the Navy is required to look around and see if sea mammals are present before they conduct the training.

Kristen Boyles, an attorney with Earthjustice, said it’s the job of the fisheries service to balance the needs of the Navy with measures to protect marine life. "Nobody’s saying they shouldn’t train," she said. "But it can’t be possible that it’s no-holds-barred."

Two cups of tea a day may help boost a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant, according to a study. It found women were 27 per cent more likely to become pregnant if they regularly drank tea compared with those who did not.

However, the same research found consuming two cola-style fizzy drinks daily seems to reduce a woman’s prospects of conceiving – and it makes no difference if the cola is a diet or sugary version. Women who drank these soft drinks at least twice a day reduced their chances of becoming pregnant by 20 per cent. There was no effect on the chances of pregnancy for women who preferred to drink coffee.

The findings were based on a group of 3,600 women who were actively trying to have a baby. The study’s author, Professor Elizabeth Hatch, of Boston University in the United States, wanted to determine if caffeine intake had any effect on women trying for a baby.

Prof Hatch said: "We found that women who drank tea two or three times a day did have a 27 per cent increased chance of becoming pregnant. We don’t know how they took the tea or if they added milk or lemon, but they had this increased chance of getting pregnant over women who did not drink tea at all."

Academics say ’’no truth’’ to lying eyes theory

Academics say ’’no truth’’ to lying eyes theory

Research by academics at two universities have concluded that the common belief of lying eyes is a myth.

Many psychologists think when a person looks up to their right they are likely to be telling a lie and glancing up to the left is said to indicate honesty. However, the experts from Edinburgh University and Hertfordshire University carried out tests and found the theory to be wrong.

The claimed link between eye movements and truth telling is a key element of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), a method of enhancing people’s lives using psychological techniques. One aspect of NLP involves teaching people about the relationship between eye movements and thought.

According to the theory, when right-handed people look up to their right they are likely to be visualising a "constructed" or imagined event. In contrast when they look to their left they are likely to be visualising a "remembered" memory.

For this reason, when liars are constructing their own version of the truth, they tend to look to the right.

Co-author Dr Caroline Watt, from Edinburgh University, said: "A large percentage of the public believes that certain eye movements are a sign of lying, and this idea is even taught in organisational training courses." "Our research provides no support for the idea and so suggests that it is time to abandon this approach to detecting deceit."

Groening told Smithsonian magazine that he was inspired by the television show "Father Knows Best," which took place in a place called Springfield. Springfield, Oregon, is 160 kilometers south of Groening’s hometown of Portland.

"When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name," Groening told the magazine. "I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ’This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do," he said.

The show has made a running joke of hiding the true Springfield’s location. In one episode, daughter Lisa points to Springfield on a map, but the animated "camera view" is blocked by son Bart’s head.

People in the real Springfield --the one in Oregon -- took on the mantle of the show’s hometown after Groening visited during a tour before the 2007 film "The Simpsons Movie."

The city has already incorporated the Simpsons into its own town lore. The Springfield Museum features a couch similar to the animated one shown in the show’s opening credits, and a plaque marking the movie’s release.(AP)

Facebook’s $1 billion gobbling up of Instagram has sent disgruntled fans of the photo-sharing app to the delete button.

Twitter and other online platforms recently buzzed with depictions of Facebook as a corporate monster trampling over a defenseless community of creative, free-spirited types. "Guess it’s time to delete my instagram app before Facebook ruins it," griped a Twitter user.

For Instagram’s 30 million users, the cult-status app has a very different identity to the mass market Facebook. Unlike Facebook, there is no advertising, and certainly no selling of users’ personal details to advertisers.

"Its ability to let its users delicately toe the line between public and private gave us a little breathing room from the all-pervasiveness of Facebook, and to see it whisked away feels like a tangible loss," wrote Jenna Wortham on The New York Times tech blog.

Russian authorities sought to deter activists from turning up at a rally against Vladimir Putin’s rule, with the church calling on them to pray instead and the chief doctor urging them to stay home due to cold weather.

Tens of thousands are expected Saturday to march through Moscow to a square just over the Moscow river from the Kremlin to protest Putin’s grip on Russia, exactly one month before he stands in presidential polls on March 4.

After much haggling the Moscow city hall has allowed opposition activists to go ahead with the march and subsequent rally, the opposition movement’s third major protest since fraud-tainted December parliamentary elections.

The head of Russia’s Orthodox Church, which has been watching opposition calls to take to the streets to demand fair elections with growing unease, called on the faithful to eschew rowdy demonstrations for a peaceful prayer.

"Orthodox Christians don’t know how to take to the streets," Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill said in an address to Russians.

"But they are taking to heart what is happening today to our people, drawing in their mind clear historic parallels with the turpitude and forgetfulness of pre-revolutionary years, with disorder, chaos and the destruction of the country in the 1990s."(AFP)

Paris authorities are mulling a plan to extend the Eiffel Tower downwards as above ground building would spoil the French capital’s geometry, the head of the landmark’s operating company said.

’’Paris Council will deliberate on Tuesday or Wednesday this project for an underground building, we need further studies and we’re moving forward with the project,’’ deputy mayor in charge of tourism Jean-Bernard Bros told AFP. Mr Bros said that the project had been looked at for several months and that a committee had been set up to group together all the extension studies already done.

It is not possible to build at the ground level as ’’you have to respect the line of sight between the Ecole Militaire and the Trocadero,’’ Mr Bros said.

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is bullish on democratic reform, but she’s not so sure about Facebook.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner--who was held under house arrest as a political prisoner for much of the past 22 years without even a telephone--was asked at the World Economic Forum on East Asia when she would join the 900-million member social network.

She said it was not an issue with adjusting to new technology, but a matter of finding the time. She said she will join when her schedule opens up.

Under Myanmar’s previous military junta, her countrymen with Internet connections were blocked by a government firewall from accessing many sites. The reformist but still military-backed government elected last year has since eased most of those restrictions.
