New software lets students take exams at leisure
Students might soon have the chance to take college exams in their own bedrooms at any time of the day or night -- without being able to cheat.
U.S. firm Software Secure has developed a programme which is designed to make sure students stay honest while taking the exam by keeping them under surveillance and cutting off any access to cribbing material.
The software firstly locks down the use of all files and the Internet, other than those specifically needed for the exam.
It then asks for a fingerprint test to ensure the candidate is the correct person and uses audio and video recording to ensure that the student is under exam conditions during the whole period.
The firm says on its website that it "brings the exam room into the computer age, making exam time less stressful for students, faculty and administrators."
At least one college in Britain, the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, is experimenting with the system and others may follow suit. Several universities in the United States already have the system in place.

The crowds and chaos of Manhattan often give visitors a thrill. It turns out they may also be putting New Yorkers at risk of hearing loss.
In many parts of Manhattan, just walking the streets during the day exposes people to decibel levels that, over time, can damage people’s ears, according to a study released as part of the International Conference on Urban Health at The New York Academy of Medicine.
New Yorkers may not realize they’re impacted by the noise surrounding them, said Robyn Gershon, a professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and one of the study’s authors. "That’s the problem with noise. It sneaks up on you."
The study’s researchers stood at spots around the city wearing monitors that measured noise levels right by their ears. The 60 sites in Manhattan were selected using data on noise complaints called into a city hot line. Measurements were taken from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Most readings – even in several small parks meant to be oases of green and calm – were above 70 decibels. Some of Manhattan’s noisiest spots were along the city’s truck routes:along First Avenue above 14th Street and along Broadway in Inwood. Times Square and East Midtown were also among the most cacophonous corners.

Having a big head may help protect against the worst ravages of dementia, say researchers. They found that people with Alzheimer’s with the largest craniums had better memory and thinking skills than patients with smaller skulls.

A controversial dating website which only allows beautiful members has launched an online sperm and egg bank for people desperate to have attractive children.
Beautifulpeople.com, which bans ugly or fat people from joining its ranks, has now launched a Beautiful Baby service, with the same stringent beauty requirements for donors.
And they have even, grudgingly, allowed normal looking people to benefit from the service.
Founder Robert Hintze said:"Initially, we hesitated to widen the offering to non-beautiful people. But everyone - including ugly people - would like to bring good looking children in to the world and we can’t be selfish with our attractive gene pool."
The website, which claims to be a game reserve of "leopards and gazelles", compared with other dating sites it describes as "jungles of hippos and warthogs", recently culled 5000 members for gaining weight over Christmas.

A woman believed to be the world’s fattest at 318 kgs is facing a battle to shed weight after being told by doctors she could die.
Terri Smith is confined to her bedroom in her Ohio home unable to move, stand or roll over by herself. Suffering from severe headaches which doctors fear could stem from a brain problem, Terri urgently needs a brain scan - but is too big to fit inside an MRI machine.
The 49-year-old was always large - at age seven she weighed almost 51 kgs. By the age of 20 Terri weighed 114 kgs but she remained active and held a job as a mental health care worker for 20 years.
When Terri was 32 she developed severe arthritis in her knees and couldn’t walk for more than a few steps. She was given an electric wheelchair and the lack of exercise made the weight pile on.
As the years passed her weight ballooned until she could hardly stand. Then, after her doctor changed her diuretic medication, she gained a staggering 41 kgs in 30 days. She suddenly found herself bedbound and has been trapped for almost three years.
Dr. Dariush Saghafi said: "We thought that it might be possible for Terri to have an MRI at the Cleveland Zoo in the machine used for the elephants and rhinos but the zoo does not have a licence for humans."

You’re a dimwit.(dimwit是「傻瓜」),還可說 You’re a bonehead/meathead/dumbbell.,後面三個字都有「傻瓜;笨蛋」之意。
A: Oh, no! That customer gave me $100, and I gave him $450 in change!
B: You’re such a dimwit!

He’s up to no good.(他不懷好意)
He’s up to something.(他不知道在打什麼算盤),這裡的something就是「某件不為人知的事」。 He’s up to no good.,強調他「不懷好意」。
例句:
A:I just saw Jay sneak into Jolin’s dressing room.
B:Really? I bet he’s up to no good.

You’re making a scene!(大家都在看你了啦!) You’re making a fool of yourself!(你讓自己看起來像個傻瓜!)
A:I don’t care! I have to have this Gucci bag today, even if I have to steal it!
B:Stop. Let’s just go. You’re making a fool of yourself!

一些人講話很老套、老掉牙,卻還沾沾自喜,對付這些人,最好的方法便是回他:That’s so old!(好老套)、或者Such a ?!(真是陳腔濫調),不然可說:Heard that before!(聽過了啦),再不然也可以明白講:That’s completely unoriginal!
Husband:Marriage is not a word; it’s a sentence.
Wife:That’s such a ?! Can’t you think of something new?

要勸人別再逞強,還可以說:That’s enough.(已經夠了)、Let it go!(放手吧),都有「別再ㄍㄧㄥ了」之意。
例句:
A:I told you I’m a tough guy! See, eating ice cream on a snowy day is nothing to me…
B:You’re shivering like crazy. Please, give it up already!

你可以說:I got turned down.
A:What’s up with Jason? I was going to treat him to lunch, and he didn’t want to go!
B:Oh, he got turned down by a girl today, so he’s in a bad mood.

She’s so plain!
英文也有類似較不狠的說法:She’s plain.(plain 是「平庸的;平凡無奇的」、She’s a plain Jane.(plain Jane指的是「平庸無奇的女孩」,只是用個常見的女生名字 Jane 來押韻)、She’s totally average.(average是「中等的;普通的」)。
A:How did your blind date go with that girl?
B:Don’t even mention it-she was too plain for me!

She’s got nothing better to do.(她沒啥事可做),或者 She’s got nothing important to do.(她沒啥重要事可做),當然,若要誇張形容此人「整天沒事幹」,便可說:She hangs out all day.,這裡的 hang out 是「閒混」之意。
例句:
A:Mary and I just chatted on the phone for five hours… Now my ears hurt!
B:Do you two have nothing better to do?
